This\ndata layer is an element of the Oregon GIS Framework. This data set is a\ncombined coverage including detailed SSURGO data where available, and STATSGO\ndata where SSURGO data is not available. Consult the web soil survey website\nfor complete metadata for SSURGO soil surveys and the State Soil Geographic\n(STATSGO) data set (http://websoilsurvey.sc.egov.usda.gov/App/HomePage.htm).\nSTATSGO abstract: This data set consists of general soil association units. It\nwas developed by the National Cooperative Soil Survey and supersedes the State\nSoil Geographic (STATSGO) data set published in 1994. It consists of a broad\nbased inventory of soils and nonsoil areas that occur in a repeatable pattern\non the landscape and that can be cartographically shown at the scale mapped.\nThe data set was created by generalizing more detailed soil survey maps. Where\nmore detailed soil survey maps were not available, data on geology, topography,\nvegetation, and climate were assembled, together with Land Remote Sensing\nSatellite (LANDSAT) images. Soils of like areas were studied, and the probable classification\nand extent of the soils were determined. Map unit composition was determined by\ntransecting or sampling areas on the more detailed maps and expanding the data\nstatistically to characterize the whole map unit. This data set consists of\ngeoreferenced vector digital data and tabular digital data. The map data were\ncollected in 1-by 2-degree topographic quadrangle units and merged into a\nseamless national data set. It is distributed in state/territory and national\nextents. The soil map units are linked to attributes in the National Soil\nInformation System data base which gives the proportionate extent of the\ncomponent soils and their properties. A special\nsoil features layer (point and line features) is optional. This layer displays\nthe location of features too small to delineate at the mapping scale, but they\nare large enough and contrasting enough to significantly influence use and\nmanagement.
